Requesting books and accessing journals
Books by Mail
The Books by Mail service is intended to support the Oregon campuses, students on rotations, and those participating in a Distance Education Program.
Request up to 2 print books from the library collection at a time.
Requesting a Book
- Search the library collection through EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) on the library homepage to find a book.
- Submit the book request form on ILLiad.
- We will mail the book to the Bookstore at COMP-Northwest.
Returning the Book
Return it to the bookstore. They will ship it back to the library on your behalf.
Renewing an Item
You can borrow the book for longer if needed. If there is no one else waiting for the book, you can request to renew it.
Journals and Articles
Searching for Journals
Use EBSCO’s Publication Finder to find a list of available journals in the library collection. The search will let you directly access online journals and identify journals available in print.
Request an Electronic Copy of an Article
We can send you a copy of an article from our print journal collection through the Document Delivery service. Submit an article request on ILLiad.
Student Access to Other Libraries
Pumerantz Library has agreements with the Lebanon Public Library and the Samaritan Health Services libraries. You can use the Lebanon Public Library, including the small WesternU print collection, anytime it is open. You can use the books, computers, and study space at the Samaritan Health Services libraries as long as you show your WesternU student ID. Find a location.
Books by Mail

How to Request a Book
- Search the library collection through EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) on the library homepage to find a book.
- Submit the book request form on ILLiad.
- We will mail the book to your preferred mailing address for free.
How to Return the Book
If you are not near either campus, you will return it the library. You are responsible for paying return shipping.
Renewing an Item
You can borrow the book for longer if needed. If there is no one else waiting for the book, you can request to renew it.

Use EBSCO’s Publication Finder to find a list of available journals in the library collection. The search will let you directly access online journals and identify journals available in print.

Browsing in Person
Books and journals are in the Pumerantz Library basement. To access the basement, use the elevator and your WesternU badge. View tutorial.
After finding a book or item you want to borrow, visit the Library Services desk on the 1st floor.

Holds for Pickup
You can place holds on books through EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) for pickup at the Pumerantz Library. We will email you when your hold is ready for pickup.
What can I place a hold on?
You can place a hold on books in our general collection. This does not include reserve, media, and reference items. If the book is checked out, your name is added to a waitlist.
How do I place a hold?
- Start your search in EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS)
- After finding the item, select the “Access options” dropdown and select “Place Hold”.
- In the new window, select the pickup location “PLC Circulation Desk”.
- Select the “Place hold” button.
- A confirmation message will display. When your hold is ready for pickup, we will send you an email.
How many holds can I place?
Students, faculty, and staff can place up to 10 items on hold.
How long will my item(s) stay on hold?
We will hold your item(s) for two days at the circulation desk.
How do I cancel a hold?
You can cancel it in person, by phone at 909-469-5323, or online through [direct link to EDS Holds & Checkouts?]
Canceling online:
- Go to EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS).
- Under “My dashboard” on the left, select “Holds & checkouts”.
- Select “Remove hold” from the item.
- Select “Remove” to confirm.
- A “Hold removed” message will appear at the top right of the screen. The item will no longer be on your Holds list.

- Request an Electronic Copy of an Article: We can send you a copy of an article from our print journal collection through the Document Delivery service. Submit an article request on ILLiad.
- Print Journals in the Library Basement: If you are on the Pomona campus, visit the Library basement to access print journals. When you enter the basement from the elevator, turn left, and left again. These journals can only be used in the library.
- Print Journals in Storage: Some of our journals are located off-site. If you are on the Pomona campus, call 909-469-5323 at least 48 hours before you need the journal. Print journals can only be used in the library.

How can I renew material?
You can renew online, in person, or by telephone. An item cannot be renewed if the item is on hold for another student.

- Log into EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS).
- Under “My dashboard” on the left, select “Holds & checkouts”.
- Go to the “Checkouts” tab.
- Select “Renew” next to the item.
- Confirm you want to extend the due date by selecting “Renew”.
- A confirmation message will show your new due date.
Error Message
If you receive the error message “This item cannot be renewed yet, the loan period has not expired”, you will be able to renew the item closer to the due date.
An item may not be renewed if the item is on hold for another student or if you have exceeded your renewal limit.
If your items are not renewed successfully, call the library at (909) 469-5323.
