COMP-Northwest (OR): Service-Learning Projects

GREATER SANTIAM BOYS & GIRLS CLUB

Boys and Girls Club logo of the Greater Santiam Western University of Health Sciences COMP-Northwest medical students are collaborating with the Greater Santiam Boys and Girls Club presenting a fun active educational program focusing on “healthy choices” including topics like; exercise and fitness, nutrition, stress management, study skills, and career planning. This provides medical students the opportunity to impact young people with positive life-changing information leading to a healthy productive future and life.

MENNONITE VILLAGE CONTINUING CARE RETIREMENT COMMUNITY – ALBANY

A green Mennonite Village logo Western University of Health Sciences COMP-Northwest medical students serve the residents of the largest long term care facility in Oregon, Mennonite Village. Students are encouraged to be creative in how to best serve the residents in a variety of living situations. Activities may include pet and music therapy, healthy lifestyles including nutrition, fitness and recreation programs, baking and cooking, salon services, going for walks and more. Through visiting and comforting the residents, COMP-Northwest students learn to appreciate, enjoy, and understand our elderly population.

PLANTING SEEDS OF CHANGE

Planting Seeds of Change: An edible Educational Endevor logo Western University of Health Sciences COMP-Northwest students assist school educators and community members as they teach students about sustainable gardens, the farmers market, and how to cook what is grown. Students work alongside students as they plant, grow, harvest, and then consume the produce in their schools cafeteria.

LEBANON COMMUNITY SCHOOLS

Lebanon Community Schools: Persuing Excellence logo Western University of Health Sciences COMP-Northwest medical students work with Lebanon Community Schools and children grades K-12, creating and delivering exercise classes, nutrition and health information, mini-medical school classes, one-on-one tutoring, personal mentoring and medical school tours to encourage children and older students to graduate and attend college.

ALBANY HELPING HANDS HOMELESS SHELTER

Albany Helping Hands Homeless Shelter logo Western University of Health Sciences COMP-Northwest medical students work with Albany Helping Hands Homeless Shelter guests as they participate in the preparation and serving of meals, in the thrift store, on the 9-acre farm, or wood lot. Medical students may provide small group educational workshops on healthy lifestyles topics.

LEBANON HEALTH CAREER LADDER

Lebanon Health Career Ladder: Creating future health care providers logo Western University of Health Sciences COMP-Northwest medical students collaborate with Oregon State University Veterinary and Pharmacy students and Linn Benton Community College Nursing and allied health professional students to educate local youth in grades 6 – 12 and their parents on the importance of attending college and future opportunity’s available to them in a wide range of healthcare and related professions. This provides medical students the opportunity to impact young people and their parents with positive life-changing information leading to a healthy productive future and life.

LEBANON FIRE DISTRICT

Lebanon Fire District logo COMP-Northwest students who have served as an EMT, Fire Fighting or First Responder are eligible for this service learning project. Medical student will perform various volunteer activities for the Lebanon Fire District throughout the community. Students will serve and volunteer under the direction of the Lebanon Fire District Chief and Volunteer Coordinator.

LEBANON SOUP KITCHEN

Lebanon Soup Kitchen logo Medical Students will assist in the cooking and serving food to the friends of the soup kitchen. The soup kitchens serves lunch in the park every Sunday. Students can assist in preparing and serving the meals and also presenting brief health education workshops to the guests in the park.
