University Marshal

Dear WesternU Family,

Many of us may think of the University Marshal simply as the person who carries the WesternU Mace during special events – chiefly Convocation and Commencement – while leading the procession of administration, faculty, staff, and students into these ceremonies. Carrying the mace and leading those processions is indeed the most visible part of the Marshal’s job, and is essential in making a strong visual connection between faculty and students at times when the emphasis often is on administrative processes and rituals. The mace itself has a storied function, as what once was a medieval weapon evolved over time into a symbol of authority. At Commencement, it represents the University’s power to confer degrees, and the University Marshal is the figure of authority who leads in that task.

Over its 45-year history, WesternU has been blessed by four outstanding University Marshals: Gayle H. Nelson, PhD (1982-96), Nadir Kahn, PhD (1997-2003), Rafi Younoszai, PhD (2004-08), and Alan Cundari, DO (2009-22). All represented the absolute best of WesternU: humanism, compassion, care, commitment to service, and educational and professional excellence.

Mindful of these qualities, it is with tremendous pleasure and pride that I ask you to join me in congratulating the new University Marshal: Gerald Thrush, PhD, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Like his University Marshal predecessors, Dr. Thrush embodies all that makes WesternU special. He is deeply committed to our mission of humanistic care for all; is a mentor, friend, and sounding board for countless students, faculty, and staff; and lives a life devoted to service, institutional excellence, and professional achievement. He is a worthy addition to the pantheon of WesternU Marshals, and we look forward to his leadership in this honored role.
