After completing my residency and fellowship in 1987, I joined the active staff of the Deaconess Hospital and was appointed Director of Research and Fellowship Training, a position I held until 1996. As Director of Research, I mentored 10 fellows who published 50 papers under my guidance, 20 in peer-reviewed journals. In 1996, I assumed the position of Director of residency training inheriting a program that was on probation from the Council on Podiatric Medical Eduction (CPME). In my first year, I was able to get the program off probation and by the second year I was able to restore 5-year full accreditation, the highest level of accreditation awarded by the CPME. The program is recognized as one of the top podiatric surgical programs in the country and consistently receives 5 year accreditation by the CPME.
At the time I assumed the position of Director of residency training, the program was 2 years in duration and accepted one resident/year. Once full accreditation was regained, I expanded the program to 3 years in duration and to 2 residents/year. I also expanded their surgical training by adding rotations in orthopedic trauma and plastic surgery. Our program and the changes I made has served as the model for podiatric surgical training for many podiatric programs locally and nationally.
In 1999, I was appointed Chief, Division of Podiatric Surgery of the BIDMC. At the time, I oversaw 3 surgeons, 6 residents, and 1 MD/PhD. I oversaw the clinical operations of 1 clinic. Our annual clinic volume at that time was approximately 10,000 patient visits and 400 surgical procedures. During my tenure, the Division has grown significantly. I now supervise 5 surgeons, 3 nonsurgical podiatrists, 6 residents and 1 MD/PhD. This includes 4 women and 2 minorities. I now oversee the clinical operations of 8 outside clinics including 2 in underserved areas. In 2022, the Division saw over 20,000 patient visits and performed over 800 surgical procedures. Personally, I saw nearly 4,500 patient visits and performed over 175 surgical procedures.
My leadership role grew nationally and internationally during this period of time as well. In 2000, I was elected to my first term to the Board of Directors of the American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS), an organization of over 8,000 foot and ankle surgeons. I served on various committees for the organization including Research, Journal Managerial and Scientific & Education committees. As the board liaison to these committees, we developed an annual research award for members, leading the search for a new publisher for our journal, Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery, as well as a search for a new journal editor. As board liaison to the Scientific and Education committee, we developed new CME courses and hands-on courses for members and residents. My leadership role in the ACFAS culminated in 2008 when I was elected president of the college. This completed an 8-year commitment of national leadership, committee mentorship and participation and involvement in the Annual Scientific Conference.
Having completed my term as president, I redirected my focus to the BIDMC community. In 2012, I led the effort to develop The Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine in Needham. The Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine is dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of all complex wounds. It currently sees patients 5 days/week. As co-director, I oversee the operation of the Center and supervise 4 wound care RN’s and 1 hyperbaric medicine technician. In 2018, The Foot & Ankle Center of HMFP opened in Dedham. The Center is a collaboration between podiatry and orthopedic foot and ankle surgery. I was a co-founder of the Center and serve as co-director. The Center treats complex foot and ankle conditions, jointly trains podiatric and orthopedic residents and participates in collaborative research. In 2022, 2 podiatric surgeons saw over 2,000 patient visits. We expect this to exceed 3,000 in 2023 with the addition of a 3rd surgeon.
I continue to be recognized for my leadership skills and abilities by being appointed to various committees and advisory boards locally, nationally and internationally including Chair of the OR supply committee and Vice-Chair of the credentials committee at BIDMC, and the Community Leadership Board of the ADA, Northeast division. I also serve on the scientific advisory board of the Rongxiang Xu Foundation and a member of the organizing committee for the International Diabetic Lower Extremity Symposium (IDLES). This symposium brings together clinical and basic science experts in lower extremity wounds for an annual 2-day symposium. My role is to help develop the program and identify speakers.
In 2018 I was asked by the APMA to serve on a joint task force of the APMA, ACFAS, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS). This task force was comprised of top level leadership from each organization for the purpose of collaborating on issues and concerns common to all 4 organizations. Additionally the task force has worked to develop a strong working relationship between orthopedic foot and ankle surgeons and podiatric surgeons. The task force remains active.
Even as my leadership responsibilities have increased over the last 15 years, I have continue to contribute academically by teaching and mentoring residents and students. I have continued to publish peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. In the past 5 years, I have published 9 articles and presented 1 award winning poster at the Annual Scientific Conference of the ACFAS in Los Angeles in February 2023. I also meet with the residents monthly to review progress on research projects and generate new ideas for research. I have also started work on the 5th edition of The Diabetic Foot: Medical and Surgical Management. Of which I am an editor. This textbook is recognized as the leading publication on diabetic foot disorders.
In closing, I have dedicated my career at BIDMC and HMS to the teaching of students, residents and other medical professionals. I have served the medical community and my profession in leadership positions locally, nationally and internationally. I have been recognized as a visiting professor, speaker and program organizer. Throughout my career I have continued the academic and clinical mission of the hospital and the medical school. Over my career, I have mentored over 60 residents and fellows and continue to do so along with assuming increasing leadership responsibilities.
