James Borke, MS, PhD

Dr. Borke is a Full Professor in the College of Dental Medicine with over 20 years of experience in Dental Education and research. Dr. Borke received his PhD in Physiology from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and is a former Fellow of the Mayo Clinic. At his previous position at Georgia Health Sciences University, Dr. Borke was the recipient of both the Distinguished Service and Distinguished Teaching Awards from the College of Graduate Studies. He is a former President of the Georgia Chapter of the American Association for Dental Research, the first elected Chair of the Georgia Health Sciences University (GHSU) School of Dentistry Faculty Senate. Dr. Borke is a former President of the Kappa Lambda Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) Dental Honor Society at GHSU, and founding President of the Beta Zeta Chapter of OKU at Western University of Health Sciences.

Dr. Borke’s research interests are in the areas of bone turnover and mechanotransduction. He has used animal models to study cranial suture fusion, orthodontic tooth movement and dental implant-bone interactions. He has most recently developed an animal model to study bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis of the jaw, work that was funded by the AO foundation in Davos, Switzerland and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. During his career, alumni of Dr. Borke’s laboratory have matriculated from 18 different countries and the United States.
