Pardee Foundation to Study BMP Signaling in Prostate Cancer<\/h2>\n\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"relative my-48 md:my-72\">\n  <div class=\"container\">\n    <div class=\"lg:flex px-12 lg:justify-center\">\n      \n      \n                  \n                  \n      <div class=\"w-full px-24 wysiwyg-content xl:w-10\/12 2xl:w-9\/12\">\n        <p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3253 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.westernu.edu\/media\/veterinary\/hao_jijun.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"382\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>May 2021\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Western University of Health Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine Associate Professor, Dr. Jijun Hao, PhD, has received a $139,000 grant from the Elsa U. Pardee Foundation to pursue a study titled\u00a0 \u201cOvercome Prostate Chemo-resistance by Inhibiting BMP Signaling\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Recognizing that chemoresistance is a major therapeutic problem for patients with prostate cancer, and the lack of current effective therapies to overcome this problem, this project investigates the Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) signaling in prostate cancer chemoresistance with a hope of finding a new avenue to overcome chemoresistance in prostate cancer. The project, slated to begin in July 2021, and expected to be completed in a year will involve working on\u00a0<em>in vitro<\/em>\u00a0prostate cancer cells and\u00a0<em>in vivo\u00a0<\/em>animal models.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Hao has expressed that the most interesting aspect of this project is the potential for exploring an untouched factor in prostate cancer chemoresistance.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNo studies of BMP signaling in prostate cancer chemoresistance have been reported to date,\u201d Dr. Hao noted. \u201cOur preliminary data implies that BMP signaling is implicated in prostate cancer chemoresistance. Success of this project will have an important impact in the field.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Most notably, the short- and long-term implications of this project are expected to help uncover a previously unrecognized role of BMP signaling in the prostate cancer chemoresistance and could potentially lead to a breakthrough in therapeutic development.
