How many are accepted into the class?<\/strong><br \/>\nGenerally, the admission committee selects 200 applicants for interviews and selects 100 applicants into the class. Typically, an alternate list of qualified applicants is formed, and referred to as it becomes necessary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>How can I make myself a more competitive applicant?<\/strong><br \/>\nDemonstrate\u00a0your desire to be a nursing professional and propensity to care for others, as well as your knowledge of the nursing profession.\u00a0It is also highly recommended to obtain health-related volunteer work and to ensure this is notated on your resume-CV and when responding to the application questions. In your application, include how your health-related volunteer work has formed your desire and motivation to be a nursing professional.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>I\u2019ve been selected as an alternate; is that a good thing?<\/strong><br \/>\nYes, students selected for an alternate seat are in a favorable position for admission as well. However, a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the sciences is a proven indicator for success in nursing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Can I be in the process of completing prerequisites at the time of application?<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you are accepted to the MSN-E program and have prerequisite courses in progress, <strong>they must be completed by the end of the spring term prior to the fall (August) start date.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Question:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Do I need experience in the health care field? Is experience preferred?<\/strong><br \/>\nNo, experience is not necessary to obtain acceptance into the MSN-Entry program. This program is designed for people without experience in healthcare. The admissions committee finds that students with degrees in other disciplines are often transferable to nursing. Can this count toward my nursing program?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Possibly. The College of Graduate Nursing recognizes the value of prior military education, military healthcare experience, and Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) education and experience. These experiences may be reviewed for transfer credit or partial course waiver when they meet California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) requirements for content and clinical equivalency.<\/p>\n<p>All decisions are made, on a case-by-case basis, to ensure RN licensure eligibility, clinical competence, regulatory compliance, and university requirements. Please review the full policy and process for transfer credit and partial course waiver in the CGN Student Catalog (please visit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernu.edu\/registrar\/catalog\/\">Catalog | Registrar<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>What military education or experience may be considered?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Military education and experience may be reviewed if it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is comparable to graduate-level nursing coursework<\/li>\n<li>Aligns with required program outcomes and BRN expectations<\/li>\n<li>Can be clearly documented through official military records<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both formal military courses and documented military occupational specialties (MOS\/ratings) may be considered when supported by appropriate documentation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are there limits on what LVN or military experience can replace?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes. To remain compliant with BRN requirements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Undergraduate-level education is not accepted for graduate credit<\/li>\n<li>Military experience must demonstrate content equivalency, not just time or role<\/li>\n<li>Clinical hours, assignments, or coursework may only be waived if equivalency is clearly established<\/li>\n<li>Some BRN-mandated content and clinical experiences may not be waived, regardless of prior experience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Decisions are made conservatively to protect licensure eligibility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What documentation is required for military education review?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Applicants must submit official military transcripts that follow American Council on Education (ACE) guidelines.
